Drama at SRWA
The Drama curriculum at the Sir Robert Woodard Academy is rooted in the development of the social, moral, spiritual and cultural aspects of the Academy's DNA.
It has been designed to develop key transferable skills (confidence, empathy, communication, tolerance of diversity, compromise and compassion for others ) which helps students to form opinions and an understanding of their feelings, social situations and the world they live in.
We believe that by developing good control of vocal and physical skills, students can be inspired and explore the wonderful world of Performing Arts characters and story, and at the same time build important life skills. We also aim to open the eyes of our students to the world of Production Arts and all its visual wonders. Our main principle is to provide students with opportunities to become creative, well rounded, tolerant, unbiased individuals with a passion and appreciation for theatre both as performer and/or audience, and compassion for all.
Developing Our Learners
We are aiming to teach students how to effectively use voice and physicality to convey feelings and demonstrate different characters; for them to be able to interpret script and have an understanding of context and subtext and to appreciate the opportunities that the world of performing and production arts has to offer and developing understanding of the visual potential of script and idea by learning how to design; costume, set, props, and lighting. Through this we also aim to develop transferable skills such as; reading, writing, analysis, empathy, compassion for others, listening and working successfully as a group member.
Structure And Sequence
Our curriculum is structured to allow students to develop a wide range of key skills, both transferable and dramatic. These skills are then revisited, deepened and consequently embedded by application to different scripts, stories and improvised work throughout the Key Stages.
Destinations And The World Of Work
Our curriculum gives students the best chance of developing the social skills, confidence and a developed sense of self, all of which are essential for all fields of work. We develop presentation skills in the spoken word, performance, design and written.
By studying a wide range of genres, characters, stories and situations, students are exposed to many potential pathways. Through extensive extra-curricular productions, international Performing Arts tours and participation in National Theatre projects, students are inspired and encouraged to achieve excellence and dare to dream.
