Physical Education at SRWA
The main principles of the PE department are:
- To educate students in how to use their body and remain healthy
- To teach students how to communicate with each other
- To give students a wide and varied experience of different sports
- To develop a passion for health, fitness and sport within students - for lifelong participation
- To provide all students with the opportunities to succeed
This fits in with the whole Academy policy by considering not only the student’s academic progress, but also their whole experience of sport within the school. We look to develop a lifelong passion for health, fitness and sport so that, when students leave school, they are enabled with the knowledge of how to keep themselves healthy through life.
Our plan is also to give students a broad and balanced PE curriculum in order to give students the opportunity to try a variety of different sports which they may develop a passion for.
Developing Our Learners
Our key aims are to develop:
- Basic and advanced skills within sports, as well as tactics and conventions of sports
- Teamwork and leadership skills
- A knowledge of how the human body functions - developed further through GCSE and BTEC options
- How to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to give students the tools to maintain 'Health' throughout life
- How to develop this health into fitness
- A knowledge of where anatomy and physiology and sport can take them throughout their life/career
Structure And Sequence
Our curriculum is structured in such a way, as to allow students to progress their skills year by year in a coherent and linear manner, in a variety of sports.
Students will experience at least seven sports throughout the year within their PE timetable, structured in such a way as to best coincide with the Adur district fixtures.
Basic skills and tactics learnt in year 7 are developed into medium level skills and tactics in year 8, then further developed in to advanced skills in year 9, incorporating leadership and teamwork throughout. Basic anatomy and physiology are also introduced throughout KS3.
In KS4 the PE curriculum is designed in such a way as to give students choice in their own learning - with Level 2 courses in GCSE and Sport BTEC available. In core time, for students that have not opted for a KS4 PE course there are 2 different pathways to choose from: a Performance (a more traditional PE curriculum) pathway, or a Health and Fitness (teaching and promoting health and fitness for life) pathway.
Rather than 'forcing' students to continue with traditional sports, the health and fitness pathway is available to encourage those students who may not have a passion for sport, to learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, rather than discourage them away from sport. This then leads into KS5 studies, developing knowledge of sports, tactics, anatomy and physiology, sport as a business and health and fitness development.
Destinations And The World Of Work
Our approach allows students to gain a knowledge of a range of sports, for lifelong participation and gives students a basis of knowledge about how the human body works. Those students that pursue a career in sport or health or fitness then have the opportunity to gain further knowledge in these areas through KS4 studies - GCSE and BTEC.
These develop, knowledge of sports, sport as a business, global sport, psychology, sociology and anatomy and physiology. This prepares students for KS5 studies.
In KS5 the BTEC course is designed to develop a knowledge of the body, how we train, and sport as a business - as well as developing practical skills. This would be beneficial for anyone seeking a career working within a sports club, physiotherapy (a competitive field into which we’ve had students progress in recent years), personal training, or a range of careers within the health and fitness industry.
Alongside this we now have students developing connections through other sporting academies, with the potential for coaching badges within the sport - leading to working as a coach.
