3D Design Options Information
What is the main aim of the course?
The 3D Design course focuses on materials, techniques and processes within resistant materials. Its aim is to encourage students to be problem solvers, designing through experimentation and innovation.
What will you learn?
You will develop a huge array of material, techniques and processes knowledge based around wood, metal, plastic and CAD CAM. Emphasis is also placed on independent thought and self-confidence, research skills and the ability to design to a brief.
The course is assignment based and you will be working through a series of projects in order to gain the necessary skills to design and manufacture in a variety of materials. The course will be focused on the design process from researching, through drawing and modelling to producing final products.
The year 10 assignments allow you to experience and develop a wide range of practical and designing skills. We undertake several projects looking into product design; making a CAD CAM trophy and seating design based on nature. We look at design in art focusing on sculptural design based on the local area and we finish year 10 with a wood working project creating a frame inspired by 20th century art styles.
In year 11 you will focus on an externally devised design and make brief allowing you to showcase your knowledge and skills and put into practice what you have learnt throughout the course.
How is the course assessed?
3D Design is 100% coursework, comprising of two components
Component 1: Creative Practice in Art & Design. This unit is internally marked and externally moderated.
Component 2: Responding to a Brief. This unit is externally marked
How does this course connect to the world of work and allow students to reach ambitious destinations?
This course is an ideal foundation for any level 3 design course at W6 Sixth Form at SRWA or vocational course where tools and resistant materials are used. This course will appeal to anyone with a practical or creative nature who enjoyed KS3 Resistant Materials. We have had many students go on to study in the the design sector, from Architects, Engineers, Product Designers, Carpenters and Joiners to CAD Designers.
