Media Studies

What is the main aim of the course?

The media plays a huge role in all our lives and shapes the world around us. Through representation, codes and conventions, we are all influenced by the media that we interact with on a daily basis.

The aim of media studies is to help us understand the powers of persuasion and better know the world around us. Through close analysis and an enquiring mind, we will deconstruct the tools and tricks of numerous types of media and gain knowledge about how to navigate a world engulfed by media of all shapes and sizes.

What will you learn?

Learnings will dive into a range of different and significant media forms throughout their involvement with the media studies GCSE framework. Learning and understanding: media language, representation, industries and audiences. We shall interrogate and analyse: newspapers, television, radio, video games, music videos and on the online social media landscape.

During the course you will learn

Components 1 and 2 will focus on learners developing their understanding and knowledge of: media language, representation, industries, audiences and contexts. Learners will spend time studying 15 set products from a range of media forms during year 10 and 11. Learnings will come to understand how media institutions influence their audiences and target specific markets.

Learners will also develop skills depending on their area of interest as component 3 offers flexibility to choose specific media products to create which cover a range of skills such as:

  • Production
  • Editing
  • Researching and planning
  • Communication
  • Data analysis
  • Collaboration

How is the course assessed?

Component 1: Exploring the Media. 1 hour 30 minutes- 40% of qualification 

Component 2: Understanding Media forms and products. 1 hour 30 minutes – 30% of qualification 

Component 3: Non-exam assessment – Creating Media Products 30%

How does this course connect to the world of work and allow students to reach ambitious destinations?

GCSE media studies opens up a path to students who wish to get involved in media arts at A-Level and beyond. Many students progress towards film studies, animation and journalism.
