Geography GCSE Options Information
What is the main aim of the course?
The aim of the Geography GCSE course is for students to engage in a range of contemporary and topical geographical issues, both human and physical, that consider the future of our dynamic and ever changing planet. Also, for students to gather more of a global awareness, socially, economically, environmentally and politically.
What will you learn?
Students will learn the following physical geography units:
1. The Challenges of Natural Hazards (tectonics, weather hazards and climate change)
2. The Living World ( deserts and rainforests)
3. The UK Physical Environment (rivers and coasts)
Students will learn the following human geography units:
1. Urban Issues and Challenges (including in depth studies into Rio and London)
2. The Changing Economic World (including an in depth study into Nigeria)
3. The Challenges of Resource Management (Energy, Food and Water)
Students will also conduct two geographical enquiries that involve completing fieldwork in both human and physical contexts.
How is the course assessed?
100% examination
Exam 1 - Living with the Physical Environment, 1 hour 30 minute exam (35% of GCSE)
Exam 2 - Challenges in the Human Environment, 1 hour 30 minute exam (35% of GCSE)
Exam 3 - Issues Evaluation and Fieldwork, 1 hour 30 minute exam (30% of the GCSE)
How does this course connect to the world of work and allow students to reach ambitious destinations?
The course develops a range of different skills for students, including: extended writing, the ability to be analytical, to construct a balanced argument and gain statistical skills too.
The GCSE course can build the foundations to continue to study A level Geography and a degree in the subject. All of which are well recognised by employers. There are so many jobs that link to Geography, some examples include: environmental management, teaching, oceanographer, meteorologist, transport manager, geologist, zoologist, town planner, civil engineer and an archaeologist.
